Covers have some foxing as well as a few of the pages in the front and back. Vertical fold line at center. The "Organization and Duties," "Preliminary Survey," "Classification of Hospitals," "Mortality, Diseases and Casualties," "Disposition of the Sick," "Tendencies of Disease," "Military Hospitals," "Medical and Surgical Service of the Army," "Volunteer Hospital and Other Supplies," "Special Relief to Volunteers in Irregular Circumstances," "Members of the Commission," "Importance of Military Hygiene," and "Appendix: Officers of the Commission; Staff of Inspection; Notes on Bull Run; Ambulance; Volunteer Army Supplies." Printed on Pages 106-107 is the transcription of a letter addressed from General George Washington to Mrs. Bache, the daughter of Benjamin Franklin. In the letter is dated July 14, 1780, and in it, Washington commends Bache and the "Ladies" for their work on purchasing fabric and making shirts for soldiers of the U.S. Army. The United States Sanitary Commission (USSC) was a private relief agency that was formed on June 18, 1861 to support sick and wounded soldiers of the Union Army during the Civil War. During the war, the USSC raised about $25 million in revenue (adjusting for the year of 1865) to support its operations and enlisted thousands of volunteers. Henry Whitney Bellows acted as the president of the USSC and Frederick Law Olmstead served as the executive secretary.. Book. Book Condition: Very Good. Binding: Soft cover
