OSLER, William (1849-1919) : A 2pp Signed Autograph Letter to Mrs Carter, Written from 13 Norham Gardens Oxford, 5.11.18

Osler writes to Mrs Carter "Dear Mrs Carter, I am glad it is over for the dear man. I had hoped to come over today. I will come on Monday on my way back from Taplolw. He had a fine life - full of good work for others & was appreciated by a host of friend in & out of the profession. You will have the inspiration of feeling that you made his last days as happy as they could be under the painful circumstances. Your sincerely Wm. Osler. Mrs Carter was the wife of Alfred Henry Carter (1849-1918), noted clinician and Birmingham medical personality, being instrumental in the founding of Birmingham University. He was Professor of Medicine there. He retired from medical practice in 1913, by which time his chief publication, The Elements of Practical Medicine (1881), had reached eleven editions. Following the outbreak of the First World War, Carter served for a time as physician to the army hospital at Wimereux and afterwards on the two hospital ships ‘Aquitania’ and ‘Britannic.’ He then returned to England, and as a Lieutenant-Colonel in the R.A.M.C. took over duties as Consulting Physician at the Tidworth Military Hospital, Wiltshire. He was twice mentioned in dispatches. Outside medicine he was a Justice of the Peace for the County of Worcester. Sir William Osler (1849-1919) was a Canadian physician and one of the four founding professors of Johns Hopkins Hospital. Osler created the first residency program for specialty training of physicians, and he was the first to bring medical students out of the lecture hall for bedside clinical training. He has frequently been described as the "Father of Modern Medicine"
