Published on the occasion of the exhibition of the same name held at the Tweed Museum of Art Minnesota from October 9, 2009 through January 10, 2010. Presents Luis Gonzalez Palma's "A Silent Unity of Gazes: The Photographic Vision of Luis Gonzalez Palma". Now-iconic images, beautifully juxtaposed with all-new work, most of which appear in published form for the very first time. The theme of the exhibition is, by now, quite familiar: Luis Gonzalez Palma's treatment of the portrait as The Gaze (every subject looks at the camera in a certain way, regardless of who the photographer is, which gaze the camera captures as an integral aspect of the final image) has resulted in some of the most moving, "New Romantic" images of our time. The images are about the paradoxical co-existence and transformation of Latin-American pain and beauty in Gonzalez Palma's art. At the same time, they have a universal significance that very few contemporary art or photography possesses with such poise and grace. The Gaze enables Gonzalez Palma to transcend the inherent voyeurism of photography, an artistic strategy that preserves the dignity of his subjects and makes both their pain and beauty apparent but non-voyeuristic. The "gaze effect" is achieved simply: The images are toned and layered except for the eyes, whose stark whiteness is retained. Gonzalez Palma's new work explores his Latin-American Romanticism further, mining such timeless subjects as the passage of time, the dream-like character of memory, and the fundamentally subjective nature of reality. Gonzalez Palma continues to enhance his photographs through layering, using special photographic papers, varnish, Kodalith, gold leaf embedded in resin, and other techniques that require his "hand-made", artisanal intervention. An absolute "must-have" title for Luis Gonzalez Palma collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed in black ink-pen on the title page by Luis Gonzalez Palma. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. This title is now collectible. As far as we know, this is the only such signed copy of the Limited Edition available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. A rare signed copy thus. 25 plates. One of the finest Latin-American artist/photographers of our time. A fine copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER LUIS GONZALEZ PALMA TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 1889523364.
