Calculated as well for the occasional reference of the professional student, as to supply others with a general knowledge of chemistry... To which is now added AN APPENDIR [sic], containing the principal objections to the antiphlogistic system of chemistry. BY JAMES WOODHOUSE, M.D. Philadelphia: Printed and sold by James Humphreys, 1802. First American edition, "with the latest discoveries, from the London second edition" of 1801, and first thus, with Woodhouse's Appendix. Two copperplate illustrations, a frontisp. ('The Economical Laboratory of Guyton' and 'The Chemical Characters of Hassenfratz & Adet') and opposite p. 201 ('Economical Laboratory of James Woodhouse. M.D.'). 215 pp. The final page [216] advertises "Dr. Woodhouse's lectures on chemistry..." 16.5 cm. 12mo., partial contemporary binding, leather, with a chipped spine label, but lacking its upper board. Ex-library; only one stamp to verso of title-page. Nineteenth-century ink ownership (Flint 1850). Text leaves lightly toned with some very occasional spotting, but clean. Bookblock sound. (Shaw & Shoemaker 2849). James Parkinson (English, 1755- 1824) was a surgeon and paleontologist, and active in radical politics. He wrote and published on all of these subjects even as his medical practice flourished. THE CHEMICAL POCKET-BOOK, first published in 1799, is a guide for the student and layman that reflects his interests in medicine, geology, and fossils. However, he is probably best-known for "An Essay on the Shaking Palsy" published in 1817, in which he relates case studies that helped him to identify a `Shaking Palsy'that has come to be known as Parkinson's Disease. James Woodhouse (American, 1770-1809), chemist, was one of the few who helped to establish the emerging science of chemistry in Europe and America as an academic and industrial study.
