[Not a facsimile or recent new copy; this is the 1895 collectible antiquarian book.] Green binding, gilt lettering on top cover and spine; light brown decorative endpapers, 178 pages plus 13 pages of advertisements at end. Condition of binding: Light scuff marks and stains, scattered discoloration marks; two corners lightly bumped; shelf wear. Internally: Short crack to first hinge (but still very tight) and small chip to first free endpaper; former owner's name in pencil on first blank; lightly age toned; light bump to upper corner of text block (creases to corners); old dog-eared page creases; faint pencil notations in text (looks like they were virtually erased); else overall Good Plus. No stickers or bookplates. Not a former library book. Text is clean and very readable. A concise, well-written overview of England. According to the author, "This book is mainly an attempt to trace to their sources some of the currents which enter into the life of England; and to indicate the starting points of some among the various threads - legislative, judicial, social, etc. - which are gathered into the imposing strand of English Civilization in this closing 19th Century." A nice uncommon, first edition of a historical antiquarian book. Very collectible. The 13 pages of 19th century advertisements at end of text are fascinating.
