Apparently he took part in the famous battle at Königgrätz [Sadowa] in 1866 [research suggests he was with Herwath von Bittenfeld's advance to Dresden in the Kingdom of Saxony, where they easily defeated the Saxon army of 25,000 and then joined with the First Army]; served in Frankreich 1870-71; Beaumont, Verdun, Sedan, Paris.
