S, Paterson each with a blank verso, and to the rear, another 2pp blanks. Visually the exterior appearance is more than aceptable, and even internally, the book is also in an acceptable condition/state of preservation and presentation for a book of its age and nature, i.e. an ephemeral item or possible breaker for individual prints. It is mainly the exterior faults that prevents a slightly overall higher grading.Despite them,it really is still an acceptable copy for its cleanliness and brightness. Alan Stuart paterson died on 16th June,1968. New Zealanders - and Wellingtonians in particular - will remeber him for the first-class daily cartoon news commentaries that he drew every day for twenty-five years, from 1925 to 1950,for the capital's morning newspaper. Perhaps only a fellow cartoonist can appreciate just how difficult this can be and how superlatively well Alan Paterson did it. His friends will remember him as a gentle and whimsical philosopher, with a glorious sense of the absurd. They will remember him, too,as an artist and illustrator of distinction and a quiet man. As for these drawings,I confess it hadn't occurred to me that bulls are figures of fun. Now that I come to think of it,the bull's status on the farm is very funny indeed. Alan Paterson had already thought of it and this book is the result. It is typical of the universal quality of his humour that these drawings will be enjoyed by everyone, and particularly by farmers, everywhere.A collection of cartoons of bulls, captioned with puns on words ending in 'bul'. Alan Stuart Paterson (b. 24th January 1902 – d. 16th June 1968) was a New Zealand cartoonist, illustrator, museum and art gallery curator. He was born in Hāwera,Taranaki,New Zealand, and moved to Wellington by 1907. Worked as a clerk for Dept of Lands and Survey,1918-1923,then he spent a year at St Martin's School of Art in London. In his early drawings the influence of Phil May and a young David Low can be seen before he developed his own fluid, economical style. Among his cast of characters was a tabby cat,Gardiner, and a black cat,Mrs Mahogany, which, together with a long-haired dog, were based on his own pets. Worked briefly as a cartoonist for the New Zealand Times then became "The Dominion" newspaper's first staff cartoonist.Made redundant during WW2 for three years, then returned to the Dominion until 1950.Two books of his Dominion cartoons,'Nothing Serious' and 'Look Pleasant Please',were published in 1932.He also produced cartoons (1926–30) and advertisements (1926–32) for the New Zealand Artists' Annual. In addition to cartoons,he produced drawings of fairies, flowers, birds and Maori goblins. From 1951 he worked for Palmerston North Country Library Service. He published two books of his Dominion cartoons in 1932 and three sets of his cartoons were published posthumously - 'The Bull Pen (1969), which sold over 100,000 copies; 'Knight After Knight (1970); and 'Professor Paterson's Book of Engaging Birds' (1971),a series of satirical drawings of birds, drawn for his friend the author June Opie, who was in hospital.
