The first English-language edition, issued here two years after the original French edition. 8vo. 255pp. Blue cloth lettered and ruled in gold at the spine. A trace of dust soiling to the top edge, and a small area of surface abrasion to the base of the front pastedown (probably due to the removal of a small dealer plate). A virtually fine copy very good non-price-clipped dust wrapper, marred only by a trace of toning to the rear panel and a miniscule sliver of very occasional edgewear. A Second World War novel told from the French perspective (and presumably in-part inspired by the author's own wartime exploits: he was a lieutenant in the French Army and won the Croix de Guerre in 1940). This Patrick O'Brian translation into English was used for both the UK and US editions, which were issued the same year, but the former is somewhat more uncommon.. Book. Book Condition: Near Fine.
