The photo album, scrapbook, and diary are each Very Good as a whole. Erik Paulsen (1912-?) lived in Bergen, Norway and immigrated to the United States in about 1940. In the U.S., he lived in New York City, likely in Brooklyn. He was part of a Norwegian social club in New York called Bondeungdomslaget. In the mid-1940s (possibly in 1946), Paulsen moved to San Francisco, and by 1948, he was living in Seattle where he operated an importing company called Scandinavian Corners, Scandinavian Importing. He continued in this line of work into at least the early 1970s. The photo album, scrapbook, and diary chronicle Paulsen's two hitchhiking trips across Europe that he undertook in 1936 and 1938. The photo album and scrapbook document his 1936 trip, and the diary records his 1938-1939 trip. In 1936, Paulsen traveled from Norway through Germany, Holland, England, Scotland, and returned by way of France, Switzerland, Italy, Austria, Czechoslovakia, Germany, and Sweden. The photo album contains photos he took on that trip which show people he had met and cities he had visited. Each photo includes captions in Norwegian describing the subject. Some of the photos taken in Germany show the rise of the Nazi Party in the form of Nazi parades, citizens wearing Nazi uniforms, and people doing the Nazi salute. Other subjects include ships, cars, airplanes, monuments, and zoo animals. A few ephemera, such as period newspapers, are laid in the photo album. The scrapbook contains business or calling cards of people Paulsen had met as well as postcards. Some of the cards are inscribed and are from people depicted in the photos. Postcards show a variety of scenic destinations and one of them relates to the Olympics. A brief note is tipped in on back pastedown of scrapbook. Paulsen recorded his 1938 hitchhiking trip in his diary. Entries are in Norwegian. Some of his diary entries are extensive. On this trip, he traveled through Germany, Italy, Monaco, France, England, and Scotland and returned by way of France, Monaco, and Lisbon, Portugal. The diary ends in February 1939 when Paulsen was in Lisbon. Paulsen may or may not have returned to Norway on his later trip because Norway fell to Germany in April 1940 during World War II.. Ephemera. Book Condition: Collectible-Very Good. Binding: Hardcover
