PHOTOGRAPH (WATKINS-PITCHFORD, W.) : An Original Sepia Portrait Photograph of W. WATKINS-PITCHFORD, by Brittain,

Brittain, Johannesburg, 1926

A fine sepia photograph, 20 x 15 cm, SIGNED by Watkins-Pitchford on the mount and dated 15-7-1926, as well as by the photographer, in the original cream wove folder, tissue guard. In choice state. Wilfred Watkins- Pitchford (1868-1952), qualified at St Thomas Hospital and saw distinguished service ias a bacteriologist and epidemiologist in Natal before the Boer War. He saw service as a surgeon in the War, and after taking a D.P.H. in London returned to South Africa doing distinguished work in the fields of epidemiol;ogy and pathology, before being appointed in 1912 as Director of the newly formed South African Institute for Medical Research. He held that post with great distinction until his retirement in 1926, when he was succeeded by Spencer Lister. In the period he was also made Chairman of the Miners Phthisis medical Bureau.
