Francois (or Francis) Rabelais (between 1483 and 1494-1553) was a French Renaissance writer, physician, Renaissance humanist, and Greek scholar. Rabelais is well-regarded by Western literary critics as a writer of world literature and one of the creators of modern European writing. The pentalogy of Gargantua and Pentagruel is Rabelais's most famous literary work. The books relay the adventures of the two titular giants with an extravagant and satirical narrative voice. William Heath Robinson (1872-1944) was an English cartoonist and illustrator best-known for his drawings of absurd and overly complicated machines that serve a simple purpose. In the United Kingdom, "Heath Robinson" and "Heath Robinson contraption" entered the popular language to describe his machines as well as any implausible or makeshift effort. In the U.S., cartoonist Rube Goldberg also drew similar machines which came to be known as "Rube Goldberg machines.". Illustr.: Robinson, William Heath. Book. Book Condition: Very Good.
