Rupert Hart-Davis, London, 1960

219 pages (complete). A terrifying novel of a bored gang of boys in post-war Norfolk who take their dissatisfaction on a another local boy. The book was written by a young John Rae who went on to become one of Britain's best known educators, and most influential headmaster of Westminster School. The dustjacket was designed by Raymond Briggs - one of his very first professional illustration works. The dustjacket is worn, torn, tanned and scuffed. It is, however, intact, whole and dramatic. The board covers have been knocked a bit on the edges. However, it is overwhelmingly smart and sound and secure. Inside, the contents are in very good condition. The pages are mild, patient, clean, clear, confident, certain, involving. The cinema adaption made in 1962 won a United Nations award. fk. Book Condition: Fair. Binding: Hardcover. Jacket: Poor
