Linoleum and Letterpress, printed and annotated Alistair Johnson. Calypso depicts the opening of the forth chapter of Ulysses, and the introduction of Leopold Bloom, who greets his cat in the kitchen while preparing Molly Bloom's breakfast tray. This 18x24 inch black linoleum block print has a spot of orange (the "color" of the chapter, according to the Linati Schema) on the first word of the text, "Mr." The rest of the text of Ulysses, Chapter 4, lines 1-38, is set in monotype Metropole down the left side of the print. Notice the two kidneys (the "organ" of the chapter) at the top of the center kitchen dresser as well as three shelves of foodstuffs and crockery described in the Ithica chapter in (U 17. 298-318). As the eyes of the cat, are described in the text as "flashing green" and "green stones," in this print, the cat's eye is rendered in a glossy acrylic paint infused with pigment made of hand-ground Malachite stone. Research of turn-of-the-century kitchen catalogs helped provide the illustration with accurate depictions of the wood-burning stove and crockery.Calypso was printed on Mohawk cover stock in an edition of 100 in Berkeley, California in May, 1986.
