Upper joint starting at head; extremities somewhat frayed; some soiling to cloth, and damp stain to bottom edge of lower board; binding slightly slack; some foxing. The portrait plate of the subject's wife has worked loose, but is present. Fair condition. Afrikaans text. (Nienaber I, p. 329) Biography of the diehard Boer general who drowned in the Vaal River in 1914, seeking to elude Union forces during the South African Rebellion, in which he played an active part. "The name of Beyers, coupled with that of De la Rey and Jopie Fourie as the trio of Afrikaner martyrs, the victims of the Botha-Smuts policy, gave rise to a great emotional upsurge during and after the war years and contributed largely to the rapid progress of the National Party of General Hertzog from 1915 onwards." - DSAB III, p. 67.
