1939-1950s. --A COP'S LIFE: DEPT. FILES, PROPERTY & NEWS STORIES -- scrapbook belonging to Baltimore Co., Maryland, Sergent Ernest P. Betz. This scrapbook is a fabulous array of police records & personal material-- news-clippings attest to the prosaic nature of violence, fear and thievery that Sgt. Betz faced daily. Betz's heroism is described in grateful letters from victims, along with his official commendations. News-clippings show Sgt. Betz's competitive nature, his enthusiasm for marksmanship, long distance running and amateur boxing. Prior to police work, Ernest Betz spent 8 years as a journeyman truck & auto mechanic. Documents show Betz filed for a furlough from police work during WW2 (for reasons not shown) and his request was denied, at which time Betz formally resigned, and returned to his former trade. Perhaps, after second thoughts Betz soon was reinstated into the Baltimore Police Dept. (based on news-clippings and his 1970 membership card from the Retired Policemen's Association). SGT.
