The crew's mission was to reach the North Pole via the Bering Strait. The expedition was financed by James Gordon Bennett, Jr., owner of the New York Herald and overseen by the United States government. German cartographer August Petermann played a pivotal role in the decision to explore the arctic region using the Bering Strait route. The leader of the expedition and commanding officer of the USS Jeannette was George W. De Long who was accompanied by a party of thirty-two other men. Sides delves into the background of the expedition and the events that transpired during the thirty-three men's harrowing journey. Hampton Sides (b. 1962) is an American historian, author, and journalist. He is perhaps best-known for his narrative histories and other works of nonfiction.
