An important 18th-century book on the history of early Islam and the Arabian Peninsula. Ockley was educated at Queens' College, Cambridge, and in 1711 was there appointed professor of Arabic. In the preface of his first book, Introductio ad linguas orientates (1706), Ockley maintained that knowledge of Oriental literature was essential to the proper study of theology.
