The first English-language (first printing). 8vo. 236pp. Grey cloth lettered in gold at the spine. Edges lightly spotted, encroaching just a fraction to occasional leaf margins, and with a little further spotting to the endpapers and to three or four preliminary leaves. A nice bright copy in dust wrapper featuring a detail of a drawing of de Sade by Man Ray. The wrapper is clipped and re-priced by the publisher, and a little nicked, torn, and soiled with some fading to the publisher's spine panel colouring. The first appearance in English of De Beauvoir's 72-page essay, 'Must We Burn Sade?', which was originally printed over two issues of the journal 'Les Temps Modernes', and is here translated into English by Annette Michelson.
