UK,slim 12mo HB,no dw/dj - as issued (?),1st edn.[The true 1st edn.A second edn appeared a year later and the book went through several reprints subsequently.] VG+.No owner inscrptn and no dw/dj.Bright,crisp,generally clean,publsher's original dark blue cloth bds with white lettering to front bd; with negligible shelf-wear and bumping to edges and corners - no nicks or tears present.Front bd with impressed rope design bordered edge,with an impressed upright anchor+leaves to centre of top edge of the border and an impressed SPCK colophon within the border's corner,to bottom left-hand corner; and to foot of front bd,within the rope border,a white ink printed,impressed horizontal anchor+rope.Off-set foxing to white ffe and to it's recto too,along with a small tear to page edge towards top third,off-set foxing continues to verso of b/w frntis; similar off-set foxing to rear free endpaper and it's verso and further off-set foxing to the last page (pp64) opposite it.Hinges minimally starting to crack - but still solid nevetheless.Top edges inevitably aged/tanned and dust-soiled,fore-edges slightly brighter and cleaner - less aged; contents bright,tight,clean, solid and sound -no intentional dog-ear reading creases to any pages' corners,would appear unread - apart from my own collation.UK,12mo HB,1st edn,vipp+8-64pp [paginated] includes an original but republished letter written by the author of a maiden voyage's account with 6 b/w line illustrations by H.J. Ford,plus [unpaginated] b/w illustrated frntis (of the steamer "Southern Cross"),a title page with a b/w map of Melanesia to it's recto,and a preface by L.P. Robin (Org.Sec.for the Melanesian Mission).A really acceptable and bright condition example. William Sinker,R.N.R.,Commander of the Melanesian Mission's steamer "Southern Cross" in the form of a letter to L.P. Robin of the Melanesian Mission giving his account of the ship's maiden trip around the islands of Melanesia - to the New Hebrides and Solomon Islands in 1903. Henry Justice FORD (1860-1941).Worked as H.J. Ford.Born in London,into a cricketing family. Studied at Clare College,Cambridge (first class,Classical tripos,1882),at the Slade School of Fine Art,and at Sr Hubert Von Herkomer's Bushey School of Art.Served as a private in the Artist's Rifles during World War I. He was a prolific illustrator,especially of anthologies of children's fairy and folk tales and poetry.His best known illustrations were for the colored Fairy Books,edited by Andrew Lang (to whom he was introduced by Percy Jacob-Hood).
