The railway's contribution to the rise of personal mobility was immense: by the end of the Victorian period over 1,100 million passengers were carried annually. Yet the relationship between the railway and its passengers often belied their mutual interdependence.Built and operated by private enterprise (with varying degrees of interference or guidance from the state) the interest of the railway companies frequently clashed with those of the travelling public. This book examines the often uneasy relationship between the railway and its passengers from the opening of the Liverpool & Manchester in 1830 until nationalisation in 1948.It provides first an overview of the impact of railways on passenger travel, exploring the reasons for the 'success' of the passenger railway and the growth of the mass passenger market. Later chapters survey the influence of the state on the industry and its services, the development of different types of passengers' services including main line, rural, commuter, leisure and special, and finally attempts by the companies to 'create' business through publicity and advertising. The wider changes in society and the economy brought about by the passenger business are of course very much kept in mind.
