Smith, Joseph : (A New and Exact Plan of the Cities of London & Westminster and the Borough of Southwark)

580 x 485 mm., one or two minor edge tears not affecting the image, repaired, light waterstain to right hand margin, otherwise in good condition.

Although only one sheet of a two-sheet plan of London this depicts the West End of London in fascinating detail. The historic thoroughfares of High Holborn and The Strand lead to the rapidly developing west. The new upmarket residential developments of Cavendish Square just to the north of Oxford Street and Grosvenor Square are displayed. Marylebone to the north is still identified as 'Pasture Grounds'. Following Bond Street running south to Piccadilly we see to the west the yet to be developed area of Berkeley Square labelled 'The Lord Berkeleys Fields'. The 'Deer Park' to the south of Piccadilly is known today as Green Park. This is bound by 'Constitution Hill' and Buckingham House now of course the Palace. The road to Chelsea runs south west from here. The city of Westminster is at the bottom of the sheet. Many buildings are shown in elevation. The whole map bears a grid, a list of wards lower left and a description of London. The plan appears in Joseph Smith's uncommon 'Nouveau Theatre du Grande Bretagne', 1724. Darlington & Howgego 71.
