In this centenary year of his birth (then 1981),Robert Gregory is a rather shadowy figure to most people, who may only know of him as Lady Gregory's son,the subject ('our Sidney and our perfect man') of a number of W. B.Yeats's poems, and the designer of the scenery for some of the Abbey Theatre's early productions. But these scant details screen an interesting and talented personality. After Harrow and Oxford,he entered the Slade School of Art,and later studied in Paris, after his marriage to a fellow Slade student,Lily Margaret Graham Parry. He had exhibitions of his work in London in 1912 and 1914,among which he showed pictures of some of the stage designs that he had done for plays by his mother,W. B. Yeats, Douglas Hyde, and J. M. Synge, which were produced at the Abbey Theatre. He had been working for the Abbey almost from its inception, not only designing but painting the scenery himself. He was a portraitist, book illustrator, and bookplate designer as well as a designer for wood and stone work.Robert also excelled on the sporting field,as a cricketer, boxer, and horseman, but he really found himself when he joined the Royal Flying Corps in 1916,and was awarded the Legion d'Honneur and the Military Cross 'for having invariably displayed the highest courage and skill' before being shot down on the Italian front in January 1918.He was thirty-six years old. This short work provides a record of some of Robert Gregory's achievements, reproductions of thirty of his works and family portraits, together with Yeats's poems about him, Lady Gregory's record of many of the tributes paid to his memory,a foreword by his children and a biographical introduction by editor/publisher.
