SPALDING, Frederick : A Fine Carte De Visite Photograph of Brigadier Gen. Sir Evelyn Wood

A n albumen print, in fine state on the photographer's thick card mount as issued. The image shows Wood seated, half -side view to the waist, in full uniform with medals. It is identical to the National Portrait Gallery NPG x39347. Sir (Henry) Evelyn Wood (1838-1919), Field Marshal Wood began his military career aged fourteen and was awarded the Victoria Cross in 1859. Having initially joined the Navy, Wood saw active service during the 1853-6 Crimean War, after which he left the Navy to join the Army. The following year he again saw action during the Indian Mutiny. In the 1870s, Wood was posted to Ghana before taking part first in the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879 and then in the First Boer War in South Africa. He was made Sirdar of the Egyptian army during the 1880s. In 1886, Wood returned permanently to Britain, where he served as Quartermaster-General at the War Office and also as Adjutant-General. Wood was promoted to Field Marshal in 1903.
