STANFORD, Edward : Stanford's Portable Map of India Shewing its Present Divisions and the Adjacent Parts of Beluchistan, Afghanistan, Turkestan, the Chinese Empire, Burmah and Siam

Edward Stanford, London, 2 October 1878

800 x 690 mm., early wash coloured lithograph, dissected and laid on linen, folding into publisher's original maroon cloth boards, ornate blind stamped panels, with gilt title, in good condition.

A fine detailed map of India and the Burmese coast. The map appears to have been first published in 1870 with further editions in 1872, 1878 (offered here), 1882, 1883 and 1886. The map extends from Turkestan and southern China south to the Maldives, Ceylon and Sumatra. In the east it shows all of Burma and extends westward to Beluchistan. Tibet is referred to as 'Bot or Tibet' with to its west the much-disputed land of 'Cashmere'. The territories are coloured according to a key and include regional provinces and the presence of the British, Portuguese and French. Provenance: Rodney Shirley collection, acquired in 1997.
