Sterne, Laurence : The Works of Laurence Sterne, M. A.; Complete in Seven Volumes

Printed by P. Byrne, Dublin, Ireland, 1794

First Dublin edition. Seven volumes, complete. Beautiful paper-covered boards with an abstract watercolored pattern in purple, pink, and blue. Backed with white paper. Blue paper title labels and matching volume numbers on paper are tipped in on spines. 4 1/2" x 7." All pages of all volumes, possibly complete (sold as is; seemingly misbound or missing pages and erroneous pagination may actually be intentional parts of the satirical work, The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, which is found in Vols. I-III; see notes below). Pages are clean and intact overall except for light age toning, occasional small spots of foxing or discoloration, browning and offsetting on a few pages in front and back, and darkening on edges of text block. Covers are very clean and intact except for light age toning to watercolored portions of boards and moderate darkening and soiling to spines and portions of boards covered in white paper. Binding is tight. Very Good copies. This is a collection of literary works by Laurence Sterne (1713-1768), an Irish-English novelist and Anglican cleric. Included herein are The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman (Vols. I-III), sermons by "Mr. Yorick" (Vols. IV-V), Sterne's posthumous works (Vol. VI), and A Sentimental Journey Through France and Italy (Vol. VII). Sterne is perhaps best-known for his two novels, The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman and A Sentimental Journey Through France and Italy. Renowned for its satire, humor, and avant-garde take on the traditional novel (including graphic devices such as intentionally blacked-out or blank pages), The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy contains the lengthy and meandering digressions of Tristram as he attempts to recollect his life story. For example, Tristram makes several attempts at telling "Chapter I" after digressing from his autobiographical account, and while present as the narrator, very little of his life is actually relayed. Several characters purposely overshadow Tristram's narrative including Tristram's father, Walter; his mother, Mrs. Shandy; his Uncle Toby; his servant, Trim; and the parson, Yorick. Yorick reappears as the protagonist and thinly veiled alter ego of Sterne in the semi-autobiographical travel novel, A Sentimental Journey Through France and Italy, which was written after Sterne took a trip to the two countries. The following are the volumes with the titles of their contents, paginations, and notes of any possible printing errors or misbindings (or possible intentional "mistakes"). Vol. I: The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman; xxi-xxii, viii-xxiii (xxi-xxiii appear here again, intentional duplicates?), 25-287 (Tristram Shandy begins mid-sentence on Page 25; this may be intentional). Vol. II: The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy; [7] 8-274 (Tristram Shandy again begins mid-story; this may be intentional). Vol. III: The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy; [5] 6-204 (Pages 175-176 intentionally blank except for the chapter number and leading word to next page). Vol. IV: The Sermons of Mr. Yorick; vii, [6] 14-311. Vol. V: The Sermons of Mr. Yorick; [7] 8-333. Vol. VI: The Posthumous Works of Laurence Sterne, A. M.; vii, [7] 8-228 (Pages 233 and 631 appear in the place of Pages 133 and 135, respectively, but contents appear correct and these may simply be misnumbered pages). Vol. VII: A Sentimental Journey Through France and Italy; [3] 4-264.. Book. Book Condition: Very Good
