In 1968 this edition of the Central Highlands represented the first totally new guide book since the Scottish Mountainerring Club began publishing its District series. The area described has been expanded to include in detail the important centres and groups of Rannoch Moor, Glencoe, Fort William, Ben Nevis and the Mamore Forest; and indeed the entire region - one of the most popular holiday venues in Scotland - is presented comprehensively and with completely (then 1979) up-to-date information. Equally of value to the general tourist and hill-walker,the mountaineer is also catered for by descriptions of principal climbs in all parts of the region. In this respect a particularly useful feature is the account of climbing in Coire Ardair of Creag Meaghaidh, with an examination of the magnificent winter potential.Rock climbs in the area are described in separate, more specialized pocket book publications. The author is particularly well-qualified to write about the Central Highlands, having over 25 years of experience in these hills and glens. He is a regular contributor to magazines dealing with the Scottish scene,as well as being an active mountaineer and member of the Scottish Mountaineering Club.See also rja1996.
