Stevens was a military officer, mountaineer, writer, and politician and served in the Union Army during the Civil War. Stevens is also known for making the first documented climb up Mount Rainier with Philemon Beecher (P.B.) Van Trump (1839-1916), another pioneering mountaineer and writer, in 1870.
