Stidham, Sadie Wells : Trails Into Cutshin Country: A History of the Pioneers of Leslie County, Kentucky

Published by the Author, Corbin, 1978

8vo. vii, 185pp, glossary, bibliography, well illustrated with numerous historical photographs, including a number of portraits, dark blue cloth with gilt titles, very light general wear-only, slight rubbed area at bottom edge of rear cover, short strip of correction tape noted at front fly, one short strip -- about 1/2-inch -- of (archival?) tape noted at each pastedown from someone (probably the author, who self-published this title) attaching the dust jacket flap to the pastedown, as noted on every copy we've ever handled, otherwise unmarked inside and out, in a dust jacket with insignificant wear at edges, occasional slight chips, including at spine ends, light general soiling, a small skinned area near front fold, and evidence of damp-staining at rear panel, now housed in protective Brodart. Overall presentation exceeds description as noted in pictures. Copy signed by author at front fly, "With All Good Wishes / Sadie W. Stidham." Dust jacket title: Leslie County, Kentucky 1878 - 1978: A Folk History Of Facts And Fiction. From the Introduction, "Trails Into Cutshin Country is intended to be a history of the pioneers of Leslie County from the late 1700s until the early 1900s. It is a history that reveals the strong character of mountain people, and it is an example of pioneer life in America. Other than the inspiration of my grandchildren, the main reason I wrote this book is to preserve the wealth of historical material in the customs, crafts, folklore and way of life in the mountain counties of Kentucky. I would also like to bring to the reader a different view of the mountain people than has been stereotyped as 'hillbilly,' and tell of the hard working, God-fearing people who risked their lives to tame the wilderness. There are still a few elderly people who can shed light on pioneer living, and it was with their help that much of the material for this book was collected.". Book. Book Condition: VG.
