Other than the inspiration of my grandchildren, the main reason I wrote this book is to preserve the wealth of historical material in the customs, crafts, folklore and way of life in the mountain counties of Kentucky. I would also like to bring to the reader a different view of the mountain people than has been stereotyped as 'hillbilly,' and tell of the hard working, God-fearing people who risked their lives to tame the wilderness.
