Dimensions 11 x 7 1/2 inches. Black ink, vignette of woman sitting next to picture of Independence Hall with a Militia man sitting next to a picture of a ship and an angle bearing a trumpet between them, top center, and a vignette of two horses pulling a street car past an imposing building, bottom center. 14 punch holes and a diamond shaped cut out. Fold lines, embossed stamp, left edge cut unevenly. Hole punch canceled stamp dated January 18, 1913. This certificate was originally issued to Martha Thomas on April 4, 1884. Signatures obscured by punch holes. The Frankford & Southwark Philadelphia City Railroad was chartered in 1858 by Act of Assembly to take over the Philadelphia and Delaware Railroad. It was the first real passenger street railway in Philadelphia, serving the citizens of the city. In 1863, it began using steam-driven engines, called "dummies" because the route was too long for horses. It was also known as the 5th and 6th Street Lines.. Book.
