Stoddart, Pringle : Autograph Letter Signed - Pringle Stoddart, Edinburgh, Scotland, 1834

Signed, "P. Stoddart." Original letter handwritten in black ink on beige paper. Letter is tipped in on another beige leaf of paper. Datelined November 6, 1834 in Edinburgh, Scotland. 7 1/4" x 9." One page. Letter is very clean and intact overall except for fold lines (perhaps original), light age toning, a few spots of discoloration, and light to moderate wrinkling. Signature and the rest of the handwriting are still very clean and legible. A Very Good copy. An original letter from Pringle Stoddart to the editor of the United Service Journal. In this letter, Stoddart informs the editor that contrary to an obituary that had been published, he is still very much alive. The letter reads, "Sir, Having observed in the United Service Journal of this month, that my name and [service?] are stated in the obituary, by which my Naval friends South of the L[--?], will believe me no longer in existence, while I am living & in excellent Health: I have to request you will in your next Journal, [contradict?] the report of my decease. I am Sir, your most obed. [obedient] serv. [servant], P. Stoddart." Pringle Stoddart (1768-1848) was a British Royal Navy officer. He traveled aboard many ships and served during several battles such as the Battle of Ochakov (1788), the Battle of Kerch Strait (1790), the Battle of Svensksund (1790), and the Battle of the Glorious First of June (1794). He achieved the rank of Lieutenant in 1796. Among his other accomplishments were being named Commander of the HMS Cruizer and capturing, with that ship, two French privateers, Le Jena and Le Brave. Stoddart passed away at his home in Edinburgh on January 29, 1848.. Manuscript. Book Condition: Collectible-Very Good. Binding: No Binding
