S. S. McClure, NY, 1902

8vo. 61pp extract, printed in double columns, illustrated with 35 drawings and photographs, including portraits and several full-page plates, salvaged from damaged issues of McClure's Magazine, Volume XIX, Nos. 1 - 5, May, - September, 1902. On September 3, 1901, while en route from the village of Bansko, Macedonia, to the town of Gorna Dzhumaia, an American missionary, Ellen Maria Stone, of Chelsea, Massachusetts, was taken hostage along with a Macedonian companion, Katarina Stefanova Tsilka. The women's captors, a band of twenty armed men, were affiliated with the Internal Macedonian Revolutionary Organization, who held them for ransom. Ultimately, after intense negotiations, the hostages were released February 2, 1902, after the ransom was paid. The incident was known as the Miss Stone Affair, and was one of the first modern American hostage crises. Includes 5 sections by Stone, and 1 section by Tsilka on the birth of her baby. It does not appear this item was ever published elsewhere. In 2003, Simon & Schuster, NY, would publish an account by Teresa Carpenter titled, The Miss Stone Affair. Housed in protective mylar report cover. Very scarce.. Illustr.: Frank Brangwyn. Book. Book Condition: VG. Binding: Soft cover
