John Stow (1525-1605) was a tailor in Aldgate, London and a Freeman of the Merchant Taylor's Company, 1547. Largely self-taught he compiled a description of London which was first published as 'A Survay of London: Contayning the Originall, Antiquity ...' in 1598 by John Wolfe and included no maps. This is from the best illustrated edition which was compiled by Reverand John Strype and published in 1720. This image is of Somerset House which at the time was a grace and favour house which gradually fell into decline. Adams (1983) 25 no. 58.
