John Stow (1525-1605) was a tailor in Aldgate, London and a Freeman of the Merchant Taylor's Company, 1547. Largely self-taught he compiled a description of London which was first published as 'A Survay of London: Contayning the Originall, Antiquity ...' in 1598 by John Wolfe and included no maps. This is from the best illustrated edition which was compiled by Reverand John Strype and published in 1720. This image is of Grays Inn, one of the four Inns of Court. Lawyers have been working at this site since at leasst 1370. Adams (1983) 25 no. 55.
