An association example as author's dedication is to Mrs Eira Roue of Plymouth, widow of Gordon Roue, one of Pymouth boat-builder Kenneth Skentlebery's apprentices.Mrs Roue provided information and history on the Mayflower Class boats.Skentlebery was born in 1899 in Plymouth. By 1921 he had statrted his own boatbuilding business at Laira Bridge in Plymouth.By the 1930s the yard was building yachts, motorboats and 14ft RNSA dinghies, cutters and whalers for the Royal Navy, and securing contracts during the 1939-45 war.Post-war he designed the Mayflower Class boat, built at Laira in 1945.By 1946, Skentlebery had acquired his 2nd boatyard, but in Salcombe - as the early Mayflowers hulls were built in Plymouth and later finished there,in Salcombe. Visually the exterior appearance is exceptional, and even internally, the book is also in an exceptional condition/state of preservation and presentation for a book of it’s nature, i.e. an ephemeral softback book.It really is an exceptional example for its cleanliness, brightness and interesting local nautical and yachting history, particularly author SIGNED. The Salcombe-Kingsbridge Estuary contains one of the most beautiful sailing areas in the world and is the home of the famous Salcombe Yawl - one of the oldest classes still racing on its original water. With numerous previously unpublished photographs,Tim Street tells the story of Salcombe's rise as a yachting centre and its distinctive racing classes, which beside the Yawl, include the Salcombe A,B, C'c,Saints and Stars. A local resident between 1933 and 2014,Tim Street first sailed in the Salbombe Regatta in 1939 and last raced there in 2011.Progressing from a pram dinghy,he later owned two National 12s,an International 14ft and,for 38 years,Y7 Choice.A well-known international helmsman in Dragons,Solings and International Six-Metres,Tim re-founded the Britsh Six-Metre fleet in 1985 and was the first British President of the International Six-Metre Association.
