Each stereocard is very clean and intact except for light to moderate age toning, light rubbing to front and back, small occasional smudges, and slight edge wear. Each stereocard and the entire collection are Very Good. A unique collection of five stereocards showing dolls and domestic scenes with children as the subjects. The following is a summary of each stereocard by title, numbered 1-5, which describes the photographer, publisher, date, and subject. 1) "Grandmother's Likeness," Strohmeyer & Wyman (photographer), Underwood & Underwood (publisher), 1891; young girl in dress and bonnet, the "grandmother," sits next to her doll, the "granddaughter." 2) "Our Father Thou Art in Heaven," H. C. White (photographer and publisher), 1904; four girls pray by a bedside in a room with a mirror, dresser, and doll on a chair; marketed as "'Perfec' Stereograph." 3) "Bless the Little Heart; Come to Grandma," Roberts & Fellows (publisher), undated; two girls play with dolls in a room; part of "Interesting Views" series. 4) "A Clear Case of Suicide," Roberts & Fellows (publisher), undated; a young girl looks inquisitively at a doll in a bowl or basket (her inquisitive expression may explain the title); part of "Foreign and American Views" series. 5) Untitled [miniature diorama with dolls], Griffith & Griffith (publisher), undated; miniature doll diorama with winter decor; part of "Foreign and American Views" series. There are four stereoscopic companies represented by this collection, Underwood & Underwood, H. C. White Company, Roberts & Fellows, and Griffith & Griffith. Underwood & Underwood was a publisher and distributor of stereocards that was founded in 1881 by brothers Elmer Underwood (1859-1947) and Bert Underwood (1862-1943) in Ottawa, Kansas. Their company was the largest publisher of stereoviews in the world at one point by the number of stereoviews they produced. Underwood & Underwood also ventured into the fields of news bureau and aerial photography. Underwood & Underwood ceased operations in the 1940s. H. C. White Co. was a producer of photos, stereoviews, and stereoscopes that was founded in 1870 by Hawley C. White (1848-1925) in New York City. By 1900, his two sons, Harrie C. White (1877-1954) and Clarence W. White (1879-1965) joined the business. Harrie and Clarence worked as photographers for their company. H. C. White Co. was once the largest producer of stereoscopes in the world. They produced stereoscopes for companies such as T. W. Ingersoll, Sears & Roebuck, and Underwood & Underwood. The Whites were also inventors. In 1910, Hawley invented the radiopticon which projected postcard images on a screen. In 1915, Clarence invented the Kiddie-Kar, a wooden tricycle for children. Among the company's other items in its product line were desks, tables, chairs, and porch furniture. H. C. White Co. closed in 1935. Roberts & Fellows was a manufacturer and publisher of stereoviews and lantern slides and was founded by H. L. Roberts and Charles T. Fellows. Griffith & Griffith was a producer of photos and stereoscopic view and was founded in 1896 by George W. Griffith (1851-1923) and his brother. Earlier in his career, George was a canvasser for Underwood & Underwood. Griffith & Griffith became a publisher and distributor of views for companies such as William H. Rau, Roberts & Fellows, and M. H. Zahner. Strohmeyer & Wyman was a producer of photos and stereoviews that was co-founded by Henry A. Strohmeyer (1858-1943) and Nehemiah Wyman (1861-1934). Most of the company's photos were taken by Strohmeyer but Wyman is also credited for having taken some of the company's earlier photos of Philadelphia. In 1901, Strohmeyer & Wyman and its catalog were bought out by Underwood & Underwood.. Photographic Image. Book Condition: Collectible-Near Fine (Near Fine). Binding: No Binding
