Signature of George R Cutter on title & endpaper, his pencil notes in text, & tow notes in his hand either laid or tipped in. Copy of George R. Cutter (1840-1891) who later authored an English/German medical dictionary, apparently the first such from an American. George Friedrich Louis Stromyer (1804-1876) was a pre-eminent German surgeon and was a pioneer in orthopedic surgery, best known for his advocacy of subcutaneous tenotomy (the use of operative methods to speed up the slower treatment of mechanical orthopedists for deformities). He was most famous for his successful surgery on William Little (1810-1894, the British orthopedic surgeon in famous his own right, who subsequently authored a book on clubfoot in 1839). Friedrich von Esmarch (1823-1908) as a professor at Kiel and a great military surgeon, most famous for describing the Esmarch bandage , an elastic bandage for hemostasis & still a staple in modern operating room.
