George Alexander Kohut (Berlin, 1897).Inscribed “Compliments of the author” on the first page. Benjamin Szold (1829-1902) was a prominent American rabbi and scholar based in Baltimore. Szold introduced a new prayer-book, Abodat Yisrael, which closely followed traditional lines. The first edition of this prayer-book appeared in 1863, with German translation, and was widely adopted by congregations in the United States (Wikipedia, 2018). He was one of the few American rabbis to meet Abraham Lincoln, to whom he went on behalf of a Jewish union soldier accused of desertion. SUBJECTS: Bible commentary.
