This is a sermon and eulogy that was originally given by Peter Thacher on the occasion of the interment of the late Governor of Massachusetts, Increase Sumner (1746-1799). The sermon was delivered before Moses Gill (1733-1800), the Lieutenant Governor of Massachusetts and the Council, Senate, and House of Representatives of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. In much of his sermon, Thacher praises the wisdom, good will, and upstanding character of the Biblical figure of Samuel who served as Chief Magistrate of Israel. Thacher likens Sumner to Samuel in that they were both wise, just, and beloved by the people they served. Thacher also instructs that good rulers abide by Christian principles because these principles are not swayed by external forces. Peter Thacher (1752-1802) was an American Congregationalist minister in Massachusetts. He was also a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and a member of the Massachusetts Humane Society and Massachusetts Historical Society.. Book. Book Condition: Very Good.
