A unique compendium of advice and example dialogs that illustrate how to be an expert conversationalist during the late nineteenth century. The book appears to be aimed toward society men and women. The book begins with an introduction that explains the traits of a good conversationalist and that one can learn the art of conversation through practice and learning. Following the introduction are many examples of questions and replies one can utilize depending on the individual they are speaking with, the setting, and the occasion. For example, sample dialogs are given for accepting or declining house calls, declining to join an event, striking up a conversation at dinner parties, accepting or refusing a ballroom dance, conversing with new acquaintances, carrying on conversations at flower shows and garden parties, and avoiding or deflecting idle gossip. There is also advice on good listening, how to carry on a conversation in general, and what subjects to talk about such as the weather, appearance of a host's residence, scientific discoveries, or the latest books. The author of this book is anonymous and simply referred to as "the author of 'Manners and Rules of Good Society.'" This latter work, in turn, only credits the author as a "Member of the Aristocracy.". Book. Book Condition: Very Good. Binding: Hardcover
