Original announcement printed on beige paper. No date, circa 1893-1910. 5 1/2" x 8 1/2." Two pages, complete. One leaf printed on both sides. Announcement is very clean and intact overall. A few wrinkles on the paper. A Near Fine copy. The following is printed on the back: "The Bancroft Library; Auditorium Building, Chicago, Ill.; History Building, San Francisco, Cal." Hubert Howe Bancroft (1832-1918) was an American historian, publisher, bookseller, and ethnologist who published and collected books on British Columbia, Central America, and the western states of the U.S. including California, Texas, and Alaska. Bancroft had a vision to donate his personal library of approximately 60,000 books for the benefit of scholars. That vision was realized when the Bancroft Library, which is named after him, at UC Berkeley was founded in 1905 upon the acquisition of his book collection. This announcement praises Bancroft and his works and is composed entirely of numerous reviews from various newspapers, publications, and individuals including the New York Tribune, London Academy, Wendell Phillips, the Chicago Times, the New York Times, and the Boston Journal. A couple reviews mention Bancroft's The Book of the Fair, which was first published in 1893. The following is one of the reviews: "'He is the Herbert Spencer of historians. His diligence in collecting data, his painstaking in arrangement, his accuracy of statement, as well as the vastness of his undertakings, contribute to give him a place among historians similar to that occupied by Mr. Herbert Spencer among sociologists.'--Boston Journal.".
