A Very Good copy. A fascinating piece of history relating to the missionary movement in the South Pacific. This pamphlet contains a sermon by Joseph P. Thompson (1819-1879), an American Congregationalist minister, abolitionist, and the pastor of Broadway Tabernacle Church in New York; a charge delivered by Swan L. Pomroy (1799-1869), an American pastor; and a speech by John D. Paris (1809-1892), an American missionary to the island of Hawai'i. All three parts by these authors were given on the occasion of the ordination of Luther Halsey Gulick, Sr. (1828-1891), an American missionary to the Kingdom of Hawai'i. Gulick also did mission work around the world including Micronesia, the Marshall Islands, Japan, China, Italy, and Spain. Thompson's sermon has a central theme of humankind being one species of many "varieties" or races. He makes several arguments to defend the concept of global unity and counterarguments to the idea that differences in human appearance constitute different species. Thompson argues that humans are one species due to the resemblance of fundamental physical features and differences in physical appearance of people from around the world having no clearly defined demarcation as one sees in different animal species. Thompson also notes the similar elements of different ethnicities including the use of language, high intelligence, and sense of morality. One of the last points Thompson makes in his sermon is that people are of one species because the Gospel appears to have the same effect when preached to all cultures. Following Thompson's sermon is the charge and instructions by Pomroy in which he informs Gulick about mission work in the South Pacific. Like in Thompson's sermon, Pomroy makes ethnological observations about Polynesian people and culture. According to Pomroy, Micronesia shows much promise for their mission work. Paris's speech, "The Right Hand of Fellowship," is a congratulatory welcome to Gulick in his newfound position as a missionary. In the back is an Appendix about the Coral Islands which has a few illustrations.. Book. Book Condition: Very Good. Binding: Soft cover
