Original stereocard on beige board. Features two stereoscopic black-and-white photographs. No date, circa 1890s. 7" x 3 1/2." Stereocard is very clean and intact overall. Board is slightly age-toned with a few small spots and smudges. Photographs are clean and intact except for light surface wear. A Very Good copy. Title in English and Spanish. Title printed below the right photo in the bottom margin. Printed text on the left side of board on front: "J. F. Jarvis, Publisher, Washington, D.C." Printed text on right side on front: "Sold only by Underwood & Underwood, Liverpool, New York, Chicago, Toronto, Ottawa, Kas., El Pasp, Tex." This stereocard shows a view of the Marble Room in the United States Capitol, Washington, D.C. The room's signature chandelier is reflected between two mirrors, creating an "infinity" effect. The Marble Room was established in 1921 as a "secret" retreat and resting area for senators in the Senate Chamber. To this day, only senators are allowed in this room. Bert Underwood (1862-1943) was an American photographer and one half of the stereocard and photography company, Underwood & Underwood, which he co-founded with his brother, Elmer Underwood (1859-1947), in 1881. Underwood & Underwood specialized in distributing and producing photographic materials and was among the most prolific distributors and producers of its kind. By 1910. Underwood & Underwood began to focus more on news photography and captured some of the earliest aerial photos. In 1920, the company stopped producing stereocards and sold its stereographic materials and rights to the Keystone View Company. Underwood & Underwood enjoyed many more years as a photograph distributor until the 1940s.. Photographic Image. Book Condition: Collectible-Very Good. Binding: No Binding
