8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. On offer is a fascinating and unique book of 19th century engineering science. The book combines both printed and handwritten tables, charts and lists of formulas of standardized reference material mostly relating to Mechanical Engineering, that the author would’ve needed in their day to day job. These reference charts and lists include: “Horse-Powers of Iron and Steel Shafts (For Given Diameter and Speed),” “Sizes of Paper,” “Sizes of Standard Hexagon Head Bolts,” “Formulae for Determining the Dimensions of Small Gears by Diametral Pitch,” “Table for Computing Theoretic Water Consumption,” “Standard Shaft Keys,” “Face Angle for Mitre Gears,” “Horse-Power Required to Turn Draw Bridges,” and many more. There are also pages related to formulas for “Belts,” “Spiral Gears,” “Crowning Pulleys,” “Straight Springs,” and others. There are some fascinating numbers for the dimensions of an ‘Edison Phonograph’ and the comparison between an Edison and a “New Phonograph” (“Edison Phonograph has a lead screw of 1/100, 1 speed 60 per min. Diam of cycl. 2” and length 4 1/2, style. Pases over about 380” per min.”). Most of the charts are hand drawn and written, with straight, ruled lines in black or red ink. There are many, especially near the beginning that have been pasted onto the page. Hand drawn diagrams occasionally accompany the charts as well, especially when they are needed to understand the numbers, with letters on the diagrams relating to letters in the charts. This is a fantastic document of engineering science, covering a wide range of materials in a steady and attractive handwriting throughout. The front and back cover show a considerable amount of wear and the back cover has its bottom 2/3rds detached. The spine is also quite worn, with a good deal of it missing as well. The pages within are still in good shape, showing little smudging or discoloration or wear. Many pages are at least slightly detached from the spine, though only a couple are fully detached. The author of the book is written on the front cover. His name is in black ink and quite faded and difficult to read, but it appears to be: W. S. G. Elliott. The book is roughly 200 pages long, with about 80 pages or so containing writing in a clear and legible script. OVERALL: G (Background: Mechanical engineering is the discipline that applies engineering, physics, and materials science principles to design, analyze, manufacture, and maintain mechanical systems. It is the branch of engineering that involves the design, production, and operation of machinery. It is one of the oldest and broadest of the engineering disciplines.). Manuscript. Book Condition: Good
