UNKNOWN : 1834 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT ACCOUNTS BOOK FILLED WITH NAMES, TRANSACTIONS, ACCOUNTS AND JOURNAL ENTRIES OF A BUSY MARYLAND TRADER, TRADESMAN AND BUSINESSMAN

Folio - over 12" - 15" tall. On offer is a super, original manuscript accounts book and journal dated January 1834 referencing Baltimore, Hagerstown, Georgetown, Philadelphia, and Cumberland strongly suggesting its origin somewhere in Frederic County, Maryland. [While the author is unidentified we are certain local historians or researchers would likely find the owner of this thriving business.] This large, rough handmade book has a dark grey-blue heavy stock paper wraps and rag paper, hand-lined, pages for account entries. The cover has a large "Jan 1834" written in large script. The cover is distinctive with an '1834' in a Naïve 'font' style. The book is filled with antebellum era trade, purchase, sales information of a wide ranging rural farmer, trader, tradesman and businessman. The first three pages consists an index of customers, many doctors, used in the account book. In this index, and more commonly throughout the text, individuals are sometimes identified by race ('colored man', colored woman', 'negro'), nationality (German, Dutch), or trade (the locksmith's wife, tin smith, fence maker, shingle maker, coffin maker et al). Most people of color are referred to by both surname and given names which is of significance to genealogists. In one instance, a "colored man" is identified as a shingle maker. The book by inference should also provide a treasure trove of genealogical information within the content of the early trade and commerce in the near environs of Baltimore. There are 106 pages of writings, a few pages removed and a few tucked including a 2 page essay titled "Analysis of Soil"; a hand written "deposit" with a Federal eagle seal drawing found on one page, business references such as 'rent on stone house', tenants of stone house are found throughout. Crops included are potatoes, wheat, lumber and cord wood. Several pages of molasses sales are included which was a significant product of export and import during this period.
