Volume II: 621 pages, complete. Eight black and white plates, complete. Pages and covers of both volumes are very clean and intact. Binding is tight. Spines of both are sunned. Slight corner and edge wear. Boards of Volume II are slightly rubbed. Front and back joints of Volume I are slightly cracked near the head and tail. Front joints of Volume II are also slightly cracked near the head and tail. Volume I has tipped-in newspaper articles about the author on the front endpaper. Very Good copies. Gustaf Unonius (1810-1902) was a Swedish-American writer, pioneer, and priest. Unonius was among the first Swedish immigrants to settle in the United States. In 1841, the same year he arrived in the U.S., he founded one of the earliest Swedish-American settlements in Wisconsin, which was called the Pine Lake Settlement or New Upsala near present-day Merton in Waukesha County. Unonius also lived in Chicago, Illinois for some time. His writings about pioneer life in the U.S. were published in Swedish, Danish, and Finnish newspapers which helped spark a wave of immigration from Scandinavia to the Upper Midwest. These books constitute his two-volume memoir which spans the seventeen years he spent in the U.S. before returning to Sweden. In his autobiography, Unonius describes the various hardships, triumphs, and the ways of life of the Midwestern frontier. He also talks about the Indigenous communities of Wisconsin. Unonius returned to Sweden in 1858 and subsequently published his memoir in 1862.. Book. Book Condition: Very Good. Binding: Hardcover
