Recipient's address handwritten in black ink by Adams on envelope. Envelope has a purple 3-cent George Washington stamp tipped in upper-right corner on front of envelope. Envelope has the following printed text on back flap: "S. H. Adams, R. D. 2, Auburn, N. Y." Signed paper datelined July 14, 1934 in Auburn, New York. Envelope also postmarked July 14, 1934 in Auburn, New York. Signed paper: 7 1/4" x 2 1/2." Envelope: 6 1/4" x 3 1/2." Signed paper is very clean and intact except for light age toning, slight wear to extremities, and a vertical crease to the right of the signature (signature unaffected). Paper may have been trimmed at top. Envelope is clean and intact overall except for light age toning, faint offsetting, slight wrinkling, and a few small spots of soiling. Envelope has been opened along top edge. A Very Good copy. Envelope is also Very Good. Samuel Hopkins Adams (1871-1958) was an American author and investigative journalist. He was part of the Progressive muckraking movement of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Adams gained renown for his muckraking articles in magazines such as McClure's Magazine and Collier's Weekly that exposed criminal health practices in the United States. Notably, Adams wrote a series of articles for Collier's that shed light on the dangers of patent medicines and false advertising. Adams's articles were highly influential and helped lead to the passage of the 1906 Pure Food and Drug Act. Adams also wrote novels, serial fiction, short stories, and nonfictional books. Among Adams's magazine stories is "Night Bus" (1933) which made its first appearance in Cosmopolitan magazine. "Night Bus" was later adapted into a screenplay by Robert Riskin for the award-winning and critically-acclaimed romantic comedy, It Happened One Night (1934), directed and co-produced by Frank Capra with Harry Cohn. The movie starred Claudette Colbert and Clark Gable. It Happened One Night is especially notable for being only one of three films to date that won all five major Academy Awards for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, and Best Adapted Screenplay..
