AGASSIZ, Louis : STRUCTURE OF ANIMAL LIFE

AGASSIZ, Louis. THE STRUCTURE OF ANIMAL LIFE: SIX LECTURES DELIVERED AT THE BROOKLYN ACADEMY OF MUSIC IN JANUARY AND FEBRUARY, 1862. New York: Charles Scribner and Company, 1866. Volume 4 of the "[Augustus] Graham Lectures; On the Power, Wisdom, and Goodness of God, as manifested in His Works," published by The Brooklyn Institute. First edition. Small text illustrations throughout. [2], viii, 128 pp. Octavo, publisher's brown cloth, gilt title to spine, brown coated endpapers. Cloth is faded on spine and along perimeters of boards, which are mildly edgeworn, with shallow loss at heel and crown. Text leaves are clean but lightly and evenly toned, though still flexible. Bookplate of Samuel A. D. Shepard on front pastedown. Ex library, with only a few marks: a single ink stamp on the front endpaper, the title-page, and p. 50, and a small shelf label on spine. Very good. The six lectures included are: 1. Four different plans of structure among animals, 2. Relative standing or gradation of the animal kingdom, 3. Remote antiquity of animal life as shown in the coral reefs, 4. Physical history of the earth.--Man the ultimate object, 5. Triple coincidence in the succession, gradation, and growth of animals, 6. Evidence of an intelligent and constantly creative mind in the plans and variations of structure. Reference: Holder, Louis Agassiz, His Life and Work, pp. 191-193, 213-214, 320., Very Good
