A fabulous peek at the critic's vast personal collection, and for our money, the best collection of its kind assembled and published thus far. Vince Aletti is the photography critic of The New Yorker Magazine, a brilliant prose stylist in his own right. His devotion to the male specimen is lovingly captured by his book, which includes a dazzling Centerfold that folds out into a panoramic view of his New York apartment, overflowing with books, photographs, and art, with barely an inch of space left for physical navigation. Aletti's obsession is the male face, body, and most important of all, aura, a profound appreciation not so much of nudity as of masculinity. The now-pervasive notion that human sexuality and gender identity are fluid and exist in a spectrum presupposes and affirms - rather than negates - that a spectrum has two opposite ends (within which such fluidity thrives; otherwise, there is no such thing as a spectrum at all) : 100% heterosexuality on one end versus 100% homosexuality on the other; masculinity on one end versus femininity on the other. In our "transgender" time (the one notion, more than any other and ironically enough, that reinforces - rather than undermines - the masculine and feminine ideals), Aletti celebrates masculinity without any defensiveness whatsoever: "For me, it's about thinking about and really working through ideas of masculinity. It's about what men are and how they act and why" (Vince Aletti). An absolute "must-have" title for erotic art photography collectors. This copy is very prominently, neatly, and beautifully signed, dated (shortly after publication), and inscribed in black ink-pen on the page opposite the title page by the author: "Thanks for adding 'Male' to your collection, Vince Aletti 12.3.08". It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. The recipient is named. Aletti did exactly one signing, in New York City, to launch the book. This title is a contemporary classic. As far as we know, this is the only such signed copy of the Limited Edition available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. A rare signed copy thus. 270 plates. One of the most brilliant critics of our time. A fine collectible copy. . ISBN 0971548064.
