Alexander, Sir James Edward : Expedition of Discovery into the Interior of Africa - Through the hitherto undescribed Countries of the Great Namaquas Boschmans and Hill Damaras - 2 Volumes

C. Struik, Cape Town, 1967

Two volume set complete. Set numbered 439 of limited facsimile reprint edition of 750. Alexander was an extraordinary man, one of those that only the Eighteenth Century produced. A professional solder he saw service in the Cape Colony, New Zealand and Crimea for example. He was private secretary to Benjamin d'Urban and was instrumental in the placement of Cleopatra's Needle on the Embankment. This is an account of his journey of exploration into Namaqualand and Damaraland 1836-37. The general condition for both are fair to fusty to good. The dustjackets are scuffed, worn, creased and wrinkled. They are however, patient, intact, whole and sure. The covers are marked from storage. They have a clubbable resolute dignity. The papertrims of both volumes are lightly foxed. Inside, despite lightly foxed early pages, the contents are sure, assured, clean, bold, clear, definite, certain and healthy. Both volumes have previous owner signatures. The illustrations are thrilling. fk. Book Condition: Fair. Binding: Hardcover. Jacket: Poor
