“William Crooke published the first two complete editions in English of Exquemelin’s work, both in 1684. The translation is based on the Spanish version by Dr. Buena-Maison, first published in 1681. The book is in four parts and two volumes – volume 1 comprising parts 1-3 of the original first edition; and volume 2, Basil Ringrose’s account of the voyages and exploits of Captains Sharp and Cook, which constitute part 4 and was first issued in 1685. First editions of both volumes are seldom found bound together. It is more usual to find volume 1 of the first edition alone; or volume 1 of the second edition combined with volume 2 of the first edition.” (National Maritime Museum Volume 4 pg 53)
“The translation was not from the original Dutch but from the Spanish translation, which emphasized the worst aspects of the English buccaneers more strongly than the original text. When this translation appeared, several former buccaneers brought libel suits against the two
different English publishers, William Crooke and Thomas Malthus. Sir Henry Morgan was awarded 200 Pounds and a public apology” (Hill pg 203), National Maritime Museum Vol 4 #175; Sabin 23479; Wing E-3894; Hill 578; Brunet II 1140
